Now-a-days, most of the systems, either they are laptop or desktop, come with pre-installed Windows Vista. Though Vista has got its own advantages but the biggest disadvantage is that it does not support all drivers and softwares. That is why we often need to have Windows XP on our PCs and Laptops. Now there are 2 ways of doing that.

Keep Vista, Install XP and create a Double Boot (Recommended)

Remove Vista and have a clean Install of XP

Now, both the options have pros and cons, I will not get into them but to be short and simple, Option 1 is recommended keeping in view the various clauses and reasons. But any how, I will be explaining both options one by one.

1. Creating Double Boot
Well, its not very difficult to do. But it is a bit time consuming and you need to own a copy of Windows XP. You must be ready for any kind of troubleshoot. And if you are not ready for it, then go for the clean install. You must backup your data before continuing with this procedure.

Step 1 – Shrink Drive and Create Space for Windows XP

Now, there are three methods/ways of doing this. All are easy and work fine. For method 2 and 3, you do not need to burn a CD.

Method – 1 (GPartEd)

Our first step will be to shrink drive C and create space for Windows XP as most of the systems these days come with a single partition only. This will be done with the help of GParted. It can be download from here. Download it, burn it to a CD and boot the system from the disc. (The boot configurations can be changed from System BIOS. The CD/DVD Drive must be the selected as First/Primary Booting Device)

When you boot from the GParted LiveCD, depending on your system, you should just need to select the auto-configuration boot option.

During boot, press Enter twice when prompted to select the keymap and language settings.

When the main GUI loads, right-click on the main Windows XP NTFS partition (depending on your setup, probably /dev/hda1) and select Resize/Move.

Use the slider to reduce the partition size and free up enough room to install XP (at least 5GB) and click Resize/Move.

The changes haven’t actually been made, they’ve just been scheduled to run. To commit the changes and resize the partition, click Apply. GParted will ask to confirm the changes – hit OK and you are done with this Step.

Method – 2 (Windows Vista Builtin Feature – DISKPART)

Boot the machine from the Vista DVD. Select the appropriate language and then “Install Now”.

On the product key page, press SHIFT + F10 to launch a Windows PE 2.0 command window. Then type in DISKPART and press enter to get into the DISKPART utility.

Now type in LIST VOLUME – this gives you a readout of the volumes available on the system. Select the main Windows XP volume by typing in SELECT VOLUME 0 (in most cases it will be Volume 0 – in our lab in was Volume 1).

Now type in SHRINK. Vista will reduce the size the selected Volume by around 50%.

Method – 3 (Windows Vista Builtin Feature – Disk Management)

Open the Computer Management panel, which you can find under Administrative tools or by right-clicking the Computer item in the start menu and choosing Manage. Find the Disk Management item in the list and select that.

Now you have to shrink your drive volume down by right-clicking on the main hard drive and choosing Shrink Volume.

Now you can choose the size that you want to shrink, which really means you are choosing the size that you want your XP partition to be. Whatever you do, don’t just use the default. I chose roughly 10gb by entering 10000 into the amount.

The next step might be confusing, because we need to change the cd-rom drive that’s invariably taking up D: at the moment, because we want to use D: for the Windows XP partition, but it’s already taken by the cd-rom drive. If you skip this step than XP will install onto the E: drive, which isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not quite as tidy.

Right-click on the cd-rom drive in the list and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu.

Now we’ll change the CD drive to use E: by selecting that in the drop-down.

Now we can create a new partition for XP to live on and make sure that the drive letter is set the way we want. If you do not create a partition now the XP install will do so automatically, but it’s easier and cleaner to do it this way.

Right-click on the Unallocated free space area and then select New Simple Volume from the menu.

Follow through the wizard and select whatever options you’d like, making sure to use D: as the drive letter.

Now you will need to close out of disk management and reboot your computer. This is because we can’t do the next step until we reboot. (you can try, but it won’t work)

So we’ve come back from rebooting… open up Computer from the start menu and then right-click on the D: drive and select properties. Give your partition a meaningful name like “XP”. It would be wise to name the C: drive to “Vista” at this point as well.

Step 2 – Install Windows XP

Now you need to insert your XP cd into the drive and restart it. You may have to configure your BIOS to enable booting from the CD drive. The boot configurations can be changed from System BIOS. The CD/DVD Drive must be the selected as First/Primary Booting Device.

Once you come to the screen where you can choose the partition to install on, then choose either the unpartitioned space or the new partition you created. Whatever you do, don’t try and install onto your Vista partition! See how much cleaner it is now that we’ve labeled each partition distinctly?

We’ll assume XP is completely installed at this point, and you will have lost your ability to boot into Windows Vista, so we’ll need to use the VistaBootPro utility to restore the Vista boot loader.

During the install you’ll be forced to install the .NET 2.0 framework. Open up VistaBootPRO and then click on the System Bootloader tab. Check the “Windows Vista Bootloader” and then “All Drives” radio buttons, and then click on the Install Bootloader button.

At this point, the Windows Vista bootloader is installed and you’ll only be able to boot into Vista, but we’ll fix that. Instead of manually doing the work, we’ll just click the Diagnostics menu item and then choose Run Diagnostics from the menu.

This will scan your computer and then automatically fill in the XP version.. click on the “Manage OS Entries” tab and then click in the textbox for Rename OS Entry, and name it something useful like “Windows XP” or “The Windows That Works”

Click the Apply Updates button and then reboot your computer… you should see your shiny new boot manager with both operating systems in the list!

If you get an error saying “unable to find ntldr” when trying to boot XP, you’ll need to do the following:

Find the hidden files ntldr and ntdetect.com in the root of your Vista drive and copy them to the root of your XP drive.

If you can’t find the files there, you can find them in the \i386\ folder on your XP install cd

This is a critical piece of information: Windows XP will be installed on the D: drive, even in Windows XP… so you’ll need to keep that in mind when tweaking your system.

You can share information between the drives, but I wouldn’t recommend messing with the other operating system’s partition too much… it might get angry and bite you. Or screw up your files. What I do recommend is that you store most of your files on a third drive shared between the operating systems… you could call that partition “Data”

UPDATED | Got a Vista PC and want to install XP so you can dual-boot between them? Here’s how to do it, in an easy, step-by-step format.

Page 2 – Create Free Space for Windows XP

We assume that before you start this tutorial, you have backed up the drive (partitions and data) that will host the two operating systems.

Your first step will be to modify the Windows Vista system partition to make space for XP using GParted

The GParted Live CD ISO is available here – burn it to CD and boot the system from the disc. The version we used was 0.3.7-7.

When you boot from the GParted LiveCD, depending on your system, you should just need to select the auto-configuration boot option.

Option 1 – Using GPartEd

During boot, press Enter twice when prompted to select the keymap and language settings.

When the main GUI loads, right-click on the main Windows XP NTFS partition (depending on your setup, probably /dev/hda1) and select Resize/Move.

Use the slider to reduce the partition size and free up enough room to install XP (at least 5GB) and click Resize/Move.

The changes haven’t actually been made, they’ve just been scheduled to run. To commit the changes and resize the partition, click Apply. GParted will ask to confirm the changes – hit OK and away you go.

Option 2 – Using DISKPART

Option 3 – Using Disk Management

Using the Disk Management GUI is really no different to using DISKPART (it’s the GUI frontend to the DISKPART utility), but using the GUI does mean that you can make the changes within Vista before rebooting to install XP, without needing to use the Vista DVD.

Right-click on Computer and select Manage. In Computer Management, expand Storage and select Disk Management.

Right-click the primary partition (the one you need to make space on) and select Shrink Volume

The default values which Vista provides represent a fairly aggressive shrink – as long as the values will give you enough space to install XP, accept the defaults and select Shrink.

Vista will churn away for a moment, and then you’ll see the newly-created free space on the primary disk. Now you can reboot and install XP.

rOcKnRoLL:

I coppied the Vista’s root folder the folder Boot, and the files bootmgr, boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM and ntldr and pasted them to the root of my XP drive.
I am using Dell Inspiron laptop, didn’t changed anything from the bios settings. I have tried the Vista bootloader Pro to reisntall the vista bootloader from the bootloader tab. Still I couldn’t fint the word ‘reinstall’, the tab has 4 or more radio buttons and all i can do is ‘install’ bootloader and as soon as i reboot my system it ends up in DOS prompting that file is corrupted, I have installed vista boot loader by clicking on a radio button says “All”. Now my question is I have done the same trick in my bosses computer (desktop) and nothing unusual happened. Why with my laptop then? I don’t wanna uninstall vista os, and i have another partition to install only xp os. But how can I get the bootmenu where I can choose which os to select? i will appreciate your replies. forgive my bad english i am international.

1.is a 47 MB healthy
2.is 10 gig Drive D: (primary partition).
3 is C: 100 gig OS partion
4.is a random 2 gig (healthy partition)

so im guessing if i wanted to do a dual boot i would have to shrink the 100 gig OS?

I saw Steve’s comment on problems with dual-booting Vista and XP on a notebook. I would like to ask some advice.

Right now I’m torn between buying an Acer TravelMate 6592G which has a 15 inch screen and XP pre-installed or an Acer TravelMate 7720G with a 17 inch screen and Vista pre-installed. I prefer the 17 inch screen because I’m a graphic designer and this particular model also has a better processor etc.

BUT, I use Adobe products that don’t run (well) on Vista. My computer salesman said it’s possible with the 17 inch model to do a dual-boot for Vista and XP, the bonus is it has two separate hard-drives so I wouldn’t need partitions.

I am NOT a techie and would try dual-booting myself with the help of a tutorial, hoping all will go smoothly. But is there any guarantee it will run properly, if I do everything right? Can anyone give me some advice? I would really appreciate it!

try this tutorial

and i would go with the 17in if that is what you really want
you can just dump vista and install Xp using this tutorial its for a Hp but its the best one to learn how to intregrate the SATA drivers

Ok, so I guess this stuff was a bit too much too chew. I got as far as creating the unallocated space, 2nd partition, on my hard drive. XP install disk does not see any hard drive and cannot continue.
(RETREAT!)… but now I can’t even reclaim the 73gb hard drive space.
a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Its not rocket science, no need for any software to run a dual boot either, all you need in vista and xp, its so simple a caveman can do it.. already have vista installed just use the disc partition tool if you know anything about windows you know what I mean, then make a new partition and install xp on this new partition, then reboot and ohhh xp took over well you need to edit the boot loader so if you know anything xp does not see vista but vista can see xp so you need to input your vista disc and boot and select repair and go to command prompt so now if you know anything about windows it all started with DOS and you need to edit the boot loader to show xp and its so simple… no need to run all this extra software crap to confuse everyone and it don’t work like it should, if you know anything about windows then doing a dual boot is as simple and knowing how to play with yourself, OMG this tutorial is about as far out in space as you can get….. glad I know how to run windows…. good luck

I had the same problem with my Sony VAIO n250e.

You cannot do this without a vista install dvd. Don’t even try or you will be pulling your hair out. Even though theres other forums with information how to do this using vistaboot pro, I could never get that program working. I suggest you have someone download you a torrent of the dvd so you can get yourself an illegal copy. Your Vista key should be on the bottom of your computer.

Good luck.

You can do it from XP. Install SP2, .NET Framework 2.0, then EasyBCD. Run BCD, click Manage Bootloader. Select Reinstall the Vista Bootloader, then click write. Reboot and it should boot into Vista. From there you can install and run BCD. Click ADD/Remove Entries, and add an entry for XP and save it. That should be it.

I couldn’t boot into anything….Vista or XP.

Now I have a copy of Vista so I got the repair done so I can boot into Vista.
I downloaded EasyBCD and ran it per instructions. On reboot I get both options: Vista or XP but when I try to boot to XP, I get another error blah, blah, “File: \ntdlr”. XP never finished setting up?!?!? How do I get past this?
Thanks

Two issues…

EasyBCD did not set the boot drive properly after I added an entry for XP while running Vista. So add your entry and then click on “Configure Boot”. Select you Windows XP OS under “Entry-Based Settings” and note the drive location. Make sure it’s set to C:\.

Even though I installed to a D: drive, the ntldr, boot.ini etc, were written to the C: drive. Since vista does not use these files I guess it’s ok to put them in the same directory…seems odd to me. At any rate, The boot entry has to be set to C:\ not D:\.

I unsuccessfully tried to dual boot with my HP Pavillion Notebook which came with pre-installed Vista Ultimate.

I desparately needed to have XP on my machine as I wanted to connect to my work via VPN.

Nothing worked … then came trying this with MS Virtual PC 2007… gave me exacly what I was looking for. I can now run Visa as the Host OS and XP as Guest OS. Enjoying best of both worlds..
MS Virtial PC 2007 is highly recommended if you need both OS running in the same machine…

but on laptop even though one reason I bought new one was for vista and dual core, etc., with vpc 2007 and xp I can make it look like my old laptop. BTW my new laptop has 4GB RAM so I allocate 2 to xp and could probably do more even.

hello,

I have (finally) successfully installed (triboot) Ubuntu “Gutsy”, Vista “Home Basic” and XP in my Compaq Presario C700. The key here is that Hp does not ship the vista cd’s and instead uses a “Recovery partition” so once you install Xp (needles to say that the box came with Vista installed) there was no way to boot back into Vista. At this point there are two options:

1.- Boot into Xp, download and install Easy BCD and fix the Vista Bootloader with the option under the “Diagnostics Center” tab.

Or

2.- Dowload and Burn a “Vista recovery CD iso image” and use it instead of the Vista DVD (the one that actually installs the operating system).

I had some problem with the first option so I had to use the second…

In case you guys are willing to try here is a link

You can use the embedded tool or the DVD – there’s no actual requirement to do it either way. I was just demonstrating the DVD method because it uses DISKPART from within Windows PE 2.0 and is just rather nifty.

You could certainly use the GUI or DISKPART from within the OS.

You don’t need the DVD, and you don’t need to reboot.
Just type diskpart in an cmd prompt and follow the guidelines as described.
things will work fine, your system will automaticly reboot, and there you have your new space

I think this is a good step by step guide but I cannot understand why there would be a need to dual boot Vista with XP. If you have installed Vista and for some reason you need XP then you can have that XP install in a virtual environment instead without going the dual boot way.

Virtual environments have come a long, long way, but the more you work with them, you realize there are some things you just can’t expect to do. Especially for a gamer like myself – there’s no way you can run a game that won’t run under Vista (and there’s a bunch at this point) – in a virtual environment. Dual-booting gives you full native access to either O/S with no simulation layers and problems to get in the way. I’ve been doing it this way since Windows 95 and NT 3.51 – and there’s no better way to go!

Gaming under Vista is pretty bad at the moment. That is one excellent reason to keep a native partition of XP on hand…

Resident Evil 5, the latest offering in the long-running series, expands on the action-heavy formula of its forerunner and is built from the ground up to support cooperative gameplay. Though it can no longer be considered a survival horror game, Resident Evil 5 manages to retain and effectively translate the most important aspect of that genre–tension–into its new mechanics. It crafts a fun, collaborative experience that will keep you on your toes the entire time.

Ten years after the destruction of Raccoon City, former S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team member Chris Redfield is an agent of the B.S.A.A. This paramilitary anti-bio-organic weapons organization travels the globe to seek out and destroy Umbrella Corporation’s creations, which have fallen into the hands of terrorists following the collapse of the multinational pharmaceutical company. When Chris gets a tip that a known weapons dealer will be making a big deal in the remote African nation of Kijuju, he heads there to put a stop to it and learn what he can about the mysterious doomsday project known only as Uroboros. Chris is joined by Sheva Alomar, a local B.S.A.A. agent, and together they battle wave after wave of infected villagers, horribly mutated monsters, and even series archnemesis, Albert Wesker.

Resident Evil 5 - Front Box Cover

The core combat mechanics haven’t fundamentally changed since Resident Evil 4. The action still unfolds from an over-the-shoulder perspective, certain battles or cutscenes are accompanied by brief quick-time events, and you still have to stop moving to fire your weapon (though you gain a bit more mobility thanks to your newfound ability to walk sideways). Resident Evil 5’s slow movement and gunplay take some time to get used to, and folks expecting a run-and-gun game may find the action too sluggish for their tastes. Fortunately, this slowness isn’t really an issue within the game, because enemies are deliberate with their attacks and are better handled with a cool head and steady aim. The standard keyboard/mouse combo offers vastly superior aiming precision and control.

Regardless of how similar the combat in Resident Evil 5 is to its predecessor, the addition of a second character makes encounters feel quite different. Teamwork is necessary to take down more powerful enemies and bosses, and having someone to watch your back goes a long way toward keeping you alive. Furthermore, there have been radical changes made to the inventory management system. The immersion-breaking briefcase from the previous game is gone, and enemies no longer politely wait for you to rummage through your things because bringing up your armory doesn’t pause the action. Each character can store up to nine items, and as long as you properly organize your inventory using the simple click-and-drag interface, all of your items are only a single keystroke away, which offers an unprecedented level of accessibility to your gear. It’s often necessary to trade items with your partner, and keeping track of who has what at all times is crucial, especially during boss encounters.

Sheva’s artificial intelligence makes her a competent companion, though her degree of skill seems to rely more on her armaments than anything else. She is extremely good at using burst fire with a machine gun, for example, but she tends to waste ammo when equipped with a handgun. That said, at no point does she feel like extra baggage that needs babysitting (unlike some of the series’ previous companions), and she can hold her own in a fight. Sheva really shines when there’s someone else controlling her. Despite these conveniences, there are some frustrating hurdles that need to be leaped over before a partner can begin playing. Co-op isn’t Resident Evil 5 isn’t a survival horror game, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t learned a great deal from the genre. Tension is the central element of survival horror games, and in the past, tension has been conveyed by the gloomy settings, the sense of isolation, and the frustratingly clunky camera angles and controls. All RE5 does differently is convey this feeling through other outlets. Having a partner introduces new types of tension, because you’re forced to rely on each other’s support, find ways to manage both of your inventories during battles, and cover larger areas since enemies can appear from almost anywhere. Waves of enemies wax and wane with just the right frequency, and while the brightly lit environments make them less scary, they can be tough to deal with because they attack in large numbers and are smarter, faster, and stronger than their counterparts in previous games. Major encounters and boss fights are doled out with excellent pacing, and since you’re never sure what to expect around the corner, you have to remain vigilant.

Having two agents in the field lets you team them up to trade weapons or push dumpsters.

Having a partner to watch your back can save your life.

RE5 is one of the most visually stunning games available, and its huge variety of environments is meticulously detailed in every way. There are lots of large, open areas, and you’ll constantly be on the move through them since there are usually so many enemies. In-game cutscenes are top-notch (though sometimes a bit over-the-top), and Chris and Sheva are incredibly well animated, especially their faces. If you happen to have the right collection of equipment, you can also take advantage of Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology to experience Resident Evil 5 in stereoscopic 3D. The dialogue is often full of the trademark goofiness found in the series. The voice acting is competent, and when paired with the excellent facial expressions, it breathes a great deal of realism into the characters. Likewise, the fantastic orchestral soundtrack heightens the gameplay with everything from the low-key, ambient tracks that play during downtimes to the frantic, upbeat songs that accompany the massive boss battles.

Resident Evil 5 successfully builds on the foundation of its predecessor while taking a drastically different direction. Having a partner introduces new degrees of gameplay depth and dramatic tension that make the game much more exciting to play. Though the slower, more deliberate movement and shooting may not appeal to everyone, this sequel’s frequent large-scale battles and co-op play still offer a fun and exciting adventure.

Introduction

Liddle Hart, commenting upon the performance of German Army during the Second World War, said, “The German army achieved its amazing run of victories not because they were overwhelmingly in strength or thoroughly modern in form, but because it was a few vital degrees more advanced than its opponents.” The advancement referred to was the successful adoption of the new theory of mobile warfare known as the Blitzkrieg or the lightening war. Due to this theory, by 1942, the Germans had invaded nine sovereign democracies, occupied swathes of Russia and threatened to cut a path to the vast oilfields of the Middle East. Adoption of this theory was a difficult task as it was a new concept, an innovation, which challenged traditional tactics. To innovate, it requires conviction, courage and a sense of purpose. Germans were fortunate to have among them a leader who possessed all these qualities and who believed in the words of Fuller, “Tactics are based on weapon power and not on the experiences of military history”. General Heinz Wilhelm Guderian, father of Blitzkrieg, successfully created, trained and led the German Panzer Forces in their stunning run of victories during the Second World War.

The son of a Prussian General, Guderian was commissioned into the Tenth Hanoverian Jager in 1908. After the war he specialized in military mechanical transport and greatly influenced by the ideas of British military writers such as Liddle Hart and Fuller, helped to develop Germany’s first tanks. In 1938 he published his highly influential book on the future of armoured warfare, “Achtung Panzer”. He was promoted to the rank of General on the outbreak of war. He exhibited his brilliant ideas and handling of Panzer forces in Poland, France and Russia. During the Russian campaign, he got involved in an insubordinate dispute with Hitler and was dismissed. Hitler recalled him as Inspector General of Panzer troops and later appointed him Chief of Staff. He retained the post, though remained constantly at odds with Hitler and was finally dismissed 21st March1945. Guderian was a great military theorist and battlefield commander, perhaps Germany’s greatest of the war.

Guderian’s Contribution Towards Blitzkrieg. One of Guderian’s famous quotes read, ”The engine of the Panzer is a weapon just as the main-gun”. Guderian was highly influenced by the new theory of mobile warfare advocating surprise attacks with lightening speed coupled with massive and coordinated air attacks to create shock. After the First World War, he focused all his energies to build a force, capable of successfully implementing Blitzkrieg. In the process of their creation, he remained associated with Tank Forces as an Instructor, Inspector and Chief of Staff and contributed towards their organization and communications. On employment of the new arm, he wrote numerous articles including his famous book Achtung Panzer. In the words of one of his contemporaries, Hasso Monteuffel, member of German war ministry, “It was Guderian – and at first he alone – who introduced the tank to the Army and its use as an operative weapon. In the best sense of the word, this new weapon bears the stamp of his personality. Its successes during the war are due to him. He was the creator and master-teacher of our Armoured Forces – and I lay particular stress on the word ‘master’.

Guderian During The Second World War. Guderian saw Second World War as a General and commander of Panzer Troops and led the campaigns in Poland, France and Russia. He not only demonstrated and proved the viability of Blitzkrieg but also exhibited the art of Generalship required to make any concept workable and successful. Here is a brief account of his role in the Second World War.

Polish Campaign. Guderian led the attack on Poland in September 1939 and his rapid success created shockwaves throughout the world. Guderian’s XIX Corps, comprising 3rd Panzer Division and 2nd and 20th Motorized Divisions spearheaded the Fourth Army in the North. Due to the speed of XIX Corps advance, Polish Army in the corridor collapsed. Driving South towards Brest, Guderian carried out strategic envelopment and again the essence of operation was speed. The Bulk of Polish tanks were destroyed before they even detrained. Army Group North, courtesy to Guderian, claimed 200 miles advance in ten days against tough opposition for losses, which were lower in proportion, than those of the other groups. Hitler, greatly impressed by the Panzers, awarded Guderian the Knight’s Cross.

French Campaign. Guderian’s XIX Corps for this campaign comprised three Panzer Divisions and a motorized Infantry Division. Hitler ordered the plan to go ahead on 10th May1940. Guderian, who served under General Kliest, attacked with great speed through Luxembourg and Southern Belgium and crossed the River Meuse near Sedan on 14th May. There, Kleist ordered Guderian to halt to which he disagreed and engaged in heated argument with him. Guderian reached English Channel and Boulogne was taken on 23rd May. Hitler halted the operations to allow infantry to catch up. Guderian was furious as he maintained that this prevented German Army cutting the escape of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. The sheer pace of Guderian’s advance, 400 miles in seventeen days, not only baffled Anglo-French Armies but also surprised the conventionally minded strategists and tacticians of German General Staff.

Operations In Russia. During the Russian campaign Guderian was given the command of 2nd Panzer Group. His Group formed part of Army Group Center under Field Marshal Bock. The Group was to operate between the Pripet Marshes and the Suvalki Peak in order to capture Moscow. The operation commenced on 22nd June1941. Guderian’s troops took Minsk within six days. In July 1941, he moved into Ukraine before moving on to Moscow. Russians commenced their counter-attack, which pushed back the over stretched German Army causing them heavy casualties. Keeping in view the worsening supply situation and setting in of the severe Russian winter, Guderian, contrary to the orders of Hitler to hold out, made a limited withdrawal to a better defensive ground in the rear. For violation of orders, Guderian was dismissed from office on 25th December1941.

Analysis of Guderian’s Generalship. QualitiesThe truth of the famous quote,” It is not the gun but the man behind the gun that matters” cannot be overemphasized. Blitzkrieg was the buzzword for German victories in the Second World War. But the fact remained that it was the Generalship of Guderian, the father of Blitzkreig, which went a long way in proving the efficacy of the concept. Here is an analysis of Guderian’s Generalship qualities, which elevated him to such glory in the annals of military history.

Professional Approach and Competence. There is no substitute to a professional approach towards war. Battles may be won by brave officers with stout hearts, but war is too serious a business to be left to Generals who have not acquired the art of Generalship through deep study. Guderian, right from the start of his professional career, was regarded by his teachers as, “Serious minded, highly competent and intensely keen in his profession”. His professional approach and competence may be judged from the fact that being an Infantry officer, he was not only the creator of the Panzer Force but also its tutor and instructor. His deep study and understanding of the art of employing armour is evident from his writings on the subject. It was due to his professional competence that despite of being junior in rank, his views were asked for during planning stage of the French campaign.

Innovative Ideas and Conviction. A successful General cannot remain oblivious to the latest trends in warfare. Guderian was a man with a sharp mind and innovative ideas but always bounded by conviction and an eye for the essential. He liked to quote Moltke’s dicta, “First reckon then risk”. Influenced by the prospects of Tanks during future battles, he approached motorization with inventive zeal. He not only created and organized a new combat arm, but simultaneously introduced a new technique of command, wireless in the single tank. As Innovation violates tradition and wins you appreciation as well as enemies, Guderian always faced a lot of criticism for his innovative ideas particularly from the conventionally minded strategists and tacticians of his time. Guderian narrates in his book Panzer Leader, the scene of a planning conference for the Western offensive. “When I uttered the words that I would arrive at River Meuse on the fourth day of the campaign and would cross it on the fifth, Hitler asked. “And then what are you going to do?” I replied “I will continue advance towards West”. Hitler was visibly tense and General Busch commander of the sixteenth Army cried out “Well, I don’t think you’ll cross the river in the first place!” Despite all opposition, Guderian managed to have his way and prove his point due to his conviction in his innovative ideas.

Courage. Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point. Prussian by birth, courage was inbuilt in Guderian’s personality. Whether it was on the table during peacetime or on the field during the momentous events of war, Guderian exhibited courage. During peacetime he stood alone against all odds and introduced tanks to the German Army. He had the courage to express his views against the ideas of his seniors including Hitler. During war he led the attacks of his Panzer Divisions in all campaigns. In Polish campaign he traveled with the leading tanks of 3rd Panzer Division and got the things moving when the advance stopped near River Brahe. During French campaign he led the surprised attack through Ardennes. Anxious to take part in the assault across the Meuse, he crossed the River in the first assault boat. In Russia again he was seen on the battle front shouting to his Panzer Troops when they were roaring past him, “Ticket to the last station”, meaning that they should go as far as they could. In his book “Panzer Leader” he narrates, “I was always there to see dusty faces and rimmed eyes of my troops showing that they have spent a hard day and a sleepless night”. It was this Generalship quality which enabled him to take charge of situation whenever needed and won him the award of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.

Power of Decision and Initiative. Some find big decisions hard to make, others have difficulties with the smaller ones. Guderian had none of these problems as he believed in the maxim, “Judgment can be developed, not acquired”. Depth of understanding and knowledge enabled Guderian to decide and take initiative without delay. By virtue of leading from the front, he was always in picture and influenced the battle. It was his timely decision during the Polish campaign, diverting 10th Panzer Division to assist 20th Motorized Division, which saved the latter from heavy losses. In the absence of orders from his superiors he had the confidence of deciding on his own. Guderian writes in Panzer Leader, “During French campaign, I never received any further orders as to what I was to do once the bridgehead over the Meuse was captured. All of my decisions, until I reached the Atlantic seaboard at Abbeville, were taken by me alone”.

Motivation and Drive. Guderian was a highly motivated General and induced the same spirit in his subordinates, driving them to accomplish unprecedented feats. His troops hero-worshipped him due to his competence and Generalship qualities. His presence at the front during most dangerous situations and his encouraging words were always a source of motivation for them. Praising XIX Corps for their excellent performance in France and motivating them for the future, he said, “I asked you to go without sleep for 48 hours and you have gone for 17 days. With masterly self- confidence and believing in the fulfillment of your mission, you carried out every order with devotion. Germany is proud of her Panzer Divisions and I am happy to be your commander. We remember our fallen comrades with honour and respect and now we shall arm ourselves for new deeds.” Views of his troops were no different about their dynamic leader and they were all praise for him when they said; “It is you, Haupmann Guderian who not merely saw an instrument in man who taught us the ‘why’ of such unavoidable toil.”

Compassionate Yet Demanding. Guderian had a very compassionate, loving and helping attitude towards his subordinates including the ordinary soldier. In his own words an officer must be “Inexhaustible in efforts to help troops”. Concerned about senseless loss of lives during the Russian campaign he had a very heated argument with Hitler, and was removed from command as a result. At the same time he was very demanding and a hard-task master. During Polish campaign he expressed his annoyance when he found that General Schweppenburg, commander of 3rd Panzer Division was not with the leading elements of his Division at the River crossing resulting in unnecessary delay. His disgust at a commander who felt compelled to withdraw at news of the presence of Polish cavalry makes an entertaining reading: “When I regained the use of my voice I asked the Divisional commander if he had ever heard of Pomeranian grenadiers being broken by hostile cavalry”.

Physical Robustness and Stamina. Generalship needs a tough constitution. It demands physical stamina, mental alertness and a resilience of spirit. Guderian had all these qualities and exhibited them by his physical presence during all major actions. At the same time, he was always mindful of the fact that, “Un-remitted effort risk health and creativity”. He always found time for rest and to recuperate his energies. During Polish campaign when there was a lull of about three days, Guderian relaxed and did that in style. With amused vanity he relished the privilege to sleep in the bed, once used by Napoleon in Finkenstein Castle. The following night, while his troops drove up for action, he went deer shooting. Within few hours he was planning again. Taking time out to relax and helped him recharge for the tasks ahead.

A Difficult Subordinate. Although he believed in “Self effacement in favour of the common cause”, Guderian was known to be a difficult subordinate. The problem appears to correspond to his innovative ideas, un-flinched conviction and highly ambitious nature. He seemed to be following the maxim, “Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way”. During Polish campaign he disagreed with General Bock’s plan to split his Panzer Division. During French campaign he contested the order to stop his Panzer Force and was temporarily dismissed from command. Contrary to Hitler’s order he withdrew his troops during Russian campaign and was removed from service. Although his notion of insubordination was never for the sake of personal ambitions, this trait of his Generalship made him unpopular among his superiors.

A Prussian Role Model. Guderian’s personality bore the signatures of Prussian character all over and he was proud of it. “May the day be dark, may the sun shine-bright, I am a Prussian and Prussian I will be.” According to Kenneth Macksey, “To understand Guderian, you have to understand Prussian discipline.” Prussians were known for their courage, loyalty, sincerity of conviction, and above all unmatched discipline. Guderian’s Generalship reflected all those qualities whether in peace or during war.

Conclusion. Guderian was a peculiar General. To the world at large he came to personify the archetypal, single-minded Prussian bent upon war. To the German people he was a hero-and worshipped by his soldiers too. Had powerful enemies among his superiors and above all, nobody seemed more confused in his relationship with Guderian, than Adolf Hitler himself. According to General Von Geyr, “Ambitious, brave, a heart for his soldiers, who liked and trusted him; rash as a man, quick in decisions, strict with officers, real personality, therefore many enemies. Blunt, even to Hitler. If you suggest revolutionary ideas, he will say in 95 per cent of cases: ‘Yes’: at once”.

Google on 7th July 2009, announced to develop an Operating System which will be available for the customers to use somewhere in the second half of 2010. As per Google Authorities, it will be an open source, lightweight operating system which will initially be targeted at netbooks. Google is looking for the partners for development of this open-source OS. The USP of this OS will be Speed, Simplicity and Security. But the general impression is that google’s chrome OS will be focused on using the internet only. They have already developed a browser called Google Chrome which is now being used by over 30 million users all over the globe.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

I have been searching over the internet for the news, updates and pictures as how will it look like and such other things. I have been able to find a number of pictures which I am including for you people to have a look at. But remember, I have found these pictures at my own resources and are not the officially released pictures.

There are a number of ways to rename various files with just one click. There are softwares available for free to achieve this job. Some are just general in nature, while others for renaming specific extension with options to change the properties as well. Windows has a built in feature which lets you rename a number of files all together with just one click. Some of the features and procedures of such softwares is described below so that you do not have to rename each and every file separately after reading this blog.

Windows

Open My Computer to the folder containing all the files you want to rename.

Select the group of files that you wish to rename. Use Shift or Ctrl to select additional files.

Right click on the first file in the list and choose Rename from the context menu.

Type a new name for the file, then hit enter.

Tips:

The first file will take on the name you type; all other selected files will append a serial number enclosed in parenthesis to the base name.

If you typed ‘file.jpg’, the second file will be named ‘file (1).jpg’, and so on with increasing numbers.

Unless you include the number, the first file will not get numbered. When sorting by name, the unnumbered file will sort to the bottom of the list. To avoid this, include the starting number in the name you type. The numbers will go up from your starting number. Remember to include the space and parenthesis.

You may not want to use this method to rename files that you plan to upload to the Web as it puts spaces in the file name. Names with spaces are generally not Web-friendly.

File Rename Tool

This program makes it easy to rename some files. You can browse to a directory. If needed, you can enter a file mask to limit the number of files shown. The application is especially handy to rename photos. You can enter a search and replace string. By pressing a button “Preview”
all files will be shown that will be renamed. By pressing the button “Execute Rename” the action is executed. The program can be downloaded from the download section. No install is needed.

The software can be downloaded from here

Renamer from Albert Bertilsson

Rename multiple files with batch operations including change, search and replace, insert, trim, and more. Offers undo feature and preview option. Works in sub-directories and can work on a specific file extension. Supports chaging of ID3 tags for renaming MP3 files. Useful for digital camera owners or anyone with a need to rename several files quickly and easily. No installation required, just unpack and run.

Cyrus became an overnight sensation after Hannah Montana debuted in March 2006. Following the success of the show, in October 2006, a soundtrack CD was released in which she sang eight songs from the show. In December 2007, she was ranked No.17 in the list of Forbes Top twenty earners under 25 with an annual earning of US$3.5 million.

‘Breakout’ is the first album by Miley Cyrus that does not have any affiliation to the Hannah Montana character.
